Find quick answers about beginner surfing in Ventura, what to bring, how lessons work, Surf Sisters, and traveling with VSG. All levels are welcome, but everything we do is made with total beginners in mind.
Meetups and community events
Do I need surfing experience?
No. Total beginners are welcome, including women who have never paddled out. More experienced surfers are welcome too.
Can I come alone?
Absolutely. Many women arrive without knowing anyone. Creating an easy way to meet surf friends is one of the main reasons VSG exists.
Do I need my own surfboard or wetsuit?
It depends on the event. Each event listing will say whether gear is included or available. Beginner-friendly boards, leashes, and wetsuits are included with surf lessons.
Are meetups the same as surf lessons?
No. Meetups and weekly surf sessions are community gatherings. A surf lesson includes structured professional coaching.

How do I join?
Follow us on Instagram, check the Events page, or email venturasurfgirlies@gmail.com. Come with or without gear, a friend, or experience.
Is VSG only for beginners?
All levels are welcome, but VSG is intentionally made for total beginners and the woman who would not quite call herself a surfer yet.
Can I attend just to watch or meet people?
Yes, when the event format allows it. Community comes first, and you do not need to prove that you are a surfer to belong.
What should I bring?
Bring water, sunscreen, a towel, warm layers, and any surf gear listed for the event. Check event details before you leave.
Surf lessons and Surf Sisters
Who are lessons for?
Lessons are for women who want a supportive introduction to surfing or focused help progressing. No prior experience is required, and gear is included.
What lesson options are available?
Private lessons are $140. Semi-private lessons for two are $120 per person. A private group of three is $95 per person. Prices shown are for Zelle; card or Venmo is slightly higher.
Can I be matched with surf buddies for one session?
Yes. Sign up solo for $130 per person and we will match you with two women at a similar level for one 90-minute coached session. Scheduling begins when a compatible group is available.
What is Surf Sisters?
Surf Sisters is VSG’s four-week matching program. You learn with the same small group in weekly coached sessions. The program rate is $575.
How do I apply or book?

Surf retreats
Are beginners welcome, and can I come alone?
Yes. The Costa Rica retreat is designed for beginner to intermediate surfers, and many women join without an existing travel or surf partner.
What is included in Costa Rica?
The February 20 to 27, 2027 retreat includes seven nights of beachfront accommodations, six coached surf sessions, board access, filmed coaching sessions, daily breakfast, airport transfers, yoga, excursions, selected meals, and retreat coordination.
What does the retreat cost?
The retreat is $2,697 per person. A $675 deposit holds your place after acceptance, with flexible payment options on the trip page.
Does applying charge me?
No. Submitting an application does not charge you. We contact you about fit, availability, and next steps before payment.
What is not included?
Flights, required travel insurance, most lunches, specified meals and food-tour purchases, personal expenses, some alcohol, and gratuities are not included.
